The first day of Navratri is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Ma Shilaputri, who is described in the scriptures as the daughter of mountains. The Term Shila means rock or mountain and the second half Putri refers to daughter. Shilaputri is said to be highly effulgent like crores of suns and moons. She rides on a bull (Nandi) and carries a trident and lotus in her hands. She wears a moon on her forehead. But on this Navratri two devi will be worshipped on the first day.
